Square Footage Calculator is a free browser tool for homeowners and DIY users who need to measure rooms and plan flooring purchases. No account is required.
Measure the floor area
Enter dimensions in feet and inches, decimal feet, inches, meters or centimeters. Choose a rectangle, L-shaped room, circle or triangle. Add or subtract rectangular sections to account for an alcove, closet or excluded area, and combine up to 20 rooms. Keep sections separate on your sketch so that overlapping areas are not counted twice.
Turn area into a purchase estimate
The flooring calculator keeps net measured area separate from the chosen waste allowance. It then rounds up to whole boxes using the coverage printed on the product packaging. Spare boxes and optional costs are separate inputs. This makes it easier to see why the purchased coverage may exceed the measured floor. For example, a 100 sq ft floor with 10% allowance needs 110 sq ft before box rounding. If each box covers 23 sq ft, five boxes supply 115 sq ft.
Keep a copy of your work
Copy or print the results before refreshing the page. Measurements remain in the current browser tab and are not saved as a cloud project.
Practical limits
Use the calculations for preliminary planning. Recheck room dimensions and packaging coverage, and follow the flooring manufacturer's installation instructions. Layout patterns, site conditions and cutting requirements can change the appropriate allowance. The tool does not optimize carpet roll cuts or provide certified real-estate measurements.
