The basics work the way you'd expect: a customizable hot key (Caps Lock out of the box — swap in whatever feels right) kicks off speech recognition, and the text lands wherever your cursor is. What sets Onit apart is that it's completely free and runs entirely on your device.No audio ever leaves your Mac, so it's completely private. macOS is live now; the iPhone app is awaiting Apple's review.

Most new dictation apps look the same under the hood: an open-source model, a polished UI, and a paywall. Onit is different. The real magic isn't the transcription — it's the cleanup layer that runs on top of it.

We've invested heavily in that cleanup pipeline. We trained our own models and made them small enough to run locally on your Mac or iPhone, and fast enough that you'll never wait on them. Onit catches the things raw transcripts get wrong:
